Funeral of Empress Maria Fedorovna

Count Marcov attended the liturgy and re-burial of the remains of Empress Maria Fedorovna (St. Petersburg September 06)

After commemorative celebrations in Ukraine, Count Marcov moved to St. Petersburg for the re-burial ceremonies. He also paid a visit to Lazarevskoye cemetery where Count Arkady Ivanovich is buried and to the palace of Tsar Paul I. This Tsar played an important role in Marcov’s family as after the death of Katherine the Great the Marcovs lost much of their influence and had to move away from Moscow and St. Petersburg to their country estates in Podolia (Now Ukraine). Tsar Paul obsession with Katherine having a role in the death of her husband Tsar Peter made him replace virtually all the important officeholders of her mother’s administration. Arkady Ivanovich moved to Grushevtsy (old name Voitovtsy) near Letichev and sponsored the church of St. Varvara. Irakly Ivanovich moved to Kukavka together with his wife Countess von Munnich and the young serf Tropinin and sponsored the village church. Tropinin became one of the most famous romantic painters of Russia; many of his early works that now hang in the museums all over the world have been painted in Kukavka due to the exile of his master.
